What is Vascular Surgery?

Vascular surgery is a specialty focused on the treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the blood vessels, including arteries, veins, and lymphatic systems. Vascular surgeons are experts in diagnosing and treating issues such as atherosclerosis, aneurysms, varicose veins, and peripheral artery disease (PAD). These conditions can lead to poor circulation, pain, and even life-threatening complications if not addressed.

Vascular surgeons use a combination of minimally invasive and traditional surgical techniques to treat conditions, often performing procedures to repair, bypass, or remove blockages in the blood vessels.

Common Conditions Treated

  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Narrowing of the arteries that causes poor circulation, often affecting the legs.
  • Aortic Aneurysm: A bulging or weakening of the aorta, which can be life-threatening if it ruptures.
  • Varicose Veins: Swollen, twisted veins, often caused by damaged valves in the veins.
  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency: A condition where the veins are unable to pump blood effectively, leading to swelling and skin ulcers.
  • Carotid Artery Disease: Narrowing of the carotid arteries, which can lead to strokes if untreated.

Procedures and Treatments

  • Angioplasty and Stenting: Minimally invasive procedures to open blocked arteries and place stents to keep blood vessels open.
  • Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT): A treatment for varicose veins that uses laser energy to close off the veins.
  • Bypass Surgery: Surgical creation of an alternate pathway for blood flow around a blocked artery.
  • Vein Stripping: Removal of damaged veins to treat varicose veins.
  • Aneurysm Repair: Surgery to repair aortic aneurysms and prevent rupture.
